True love will find you in the end.

2 Feb

Here in Auckland we were enjoying the annual one-day holiday in which we celebrate how great it is to live in Auckland. Being the height of summer, most of us spend it in the sunshine with close friends, where we talk about all the other cities around the world we’d rather be living in.

This year I was fortunate enough to spend the day in the presence of Daniel Johnston at a pleasant little music festival in the middle of the city. He seemed particularly affected by the unexpectedly heavy wind, and struggled through his guitar parts. When a young local band began playing on the stage next to him the remainder of his set was drowned out and we were not treated to his most stunning song, True Love Will Find You In The End.

I won’t delve into the complex life and psychology of this so-called ‘outsider artist’, but his early bedroom recordings have been an inspiration to generations of songwriters, including Kurt Cobain. This is the trailer to the documentary about his life and career, featuring that wonderful song.

it’s my fave too, it was my finale for Valentines Day Mix 2009…but I must say I’ve got an even better finale for VDay Mix 2010!
