She lies on the grassy verge, her shoulders pressed into rock, my toes dug into sand. We’ve made a deal to breathe together to the roll of the ocean. When we first lay down the waterline was miles away. Now the night has thrown a blanket across us and for all we know the waves have us surrounded. I wonder what she sees when our eyes meet – the reflection of her fire-eyes flickering, or just big black coals where my flame used to be. This was her idea, not mine.
