Watch the river slipping slowly away.

That summer my father got out all his tools and built the bridge across the stream while my mother and I played Pooh Sticks. Pooh Sticks is not so much a game as it is a competitive way to pass the time. Here’s how it goes: You each drop sticks into the torrent below and the first stick to appear out the other side of the bridge is the winner. Most of the time it proves impossible to tell whose stick is whose, but in those days that wasn’t exactly the point. My grandfather boiled his billy tea over a small fire and ate crackers smothered in yellow chutney. The rest of us double-dipped our celery stalks in crunchy peanut butter and everything was amazing.
